ARE JOURNALIST DENIED PRESS FREEDOM IN NIGERIA ? onnynewsdynamic.blogspot.com
Freedom of expression and journalists goes to the very heart of what it
means to be human and civilized. Thus, the defense of journalists and
press freedom is fundamental to the exercise of the other human rights
and the dignity of the citizen in his quest to realize his aspirations
and make contributions to national development and societal peace.
Press freedom to a large extent reduces the secrecy shrouding the activities of public officials and the question still remains if the journalists are being manipulated by public figures to cover up for their seen crimes. Public officials should commit themselves to openness which is a quick test of integrity because while some works are done in secret, their are good works done while majority of their works are bad.
Nigerian journalism now seem to be a joke to the world because of how wealthy individuals and public officials emasculate the press with their power and wealth, the press themselves have shown a high level of unprofessional-ism by writing and reporting a news without investigating and getting the information from the right source. Journalist should understand that the only way to uphold a peaceful and great nation is by journalism.
Press freedom in Nigeria is riddled worth conditionalities and other paralyzing enactments that do not exist in other democracies. Brutalization and incarcerations of well meaning journalists have also made caricature of Nigeria press by the continued intimidation and harassment of press men by the law enforcement agencies. The economy of Nigeria has poised a great threat to genuine journalism and as long as power and its control remain great sources of wealth and prestige, Nigerians who desire unchecked power will continue to emasculate, smoother and control the press.
